How to Remove the Rear Dome Map Light in a 2003–2006 GM Truck or SUV
Share
Today we're showing you how to remove the rear dome light from this 2003 Silverado. It's pretty easy — I like using this little slim pry tool. Just pop it in there, pop this loose, pop the tab on the plug off, and you're done — just like that, removed. Here's exactly how we pull them when we're getting dome lights ready for the store.
What you'll need
- A little slim metal pry tool
Step 1: Pop the lens open
Just pop it in there. Work the flat end of the slim pry tool under the edge of the lens and pop the lens cover open.

Step 2: Pop the housing loose and pull it down
Pop this loose. Work the pry tool under the edge of the housing to pop it loose from the headliner, then grab the housing and pull it down out of the opening with the lens still attached.

Step 3: Pop the tab on the plug and unplug it
Then you got the plug in here — pop that tab off. Work the pry tool under the wiring harness plug, pop the tab, and disconnect it from the light housing. Don't pull on the wires themselves.

Step 4: The light is out
And you're done — just like that, removed. The headliner opening is left empty with just the wiring behind it. Installation is these steps in reverse.

What to check on the replacement
- Lens: check the lens isn't cracked, cloudy, or yellowed — it has to be clear to do its job.
- Switch: press the rocker switch and make sure it moves freely and clicks; worn switches get mushy.
- Socket: look at the bulb socket and connector for melted or corroded contacts.
