How to Remove the Overhead Console/Dome Light in a 2011–2016 Ford F-250/F-350

Today we're showing you how to remove the overhead console from this 2012 F-250. Pretty simple — just stick your fingers in here and pull it down. The console is held by clips, so it pops out by hand with no tools needed. Pop the clips, unplug the wiring connectors on the back, and pull it off. Here's exactly how we pull them when we're getting consoles ready for the store.

What you'll need

  • That's it — the console pops out by hand (we wear work gloves)

Step 1: Pull the front edge of the console down

Just stick your fingers in here and pull it down. Stick your fingers in the front edge of the overhead console and pull it down and toward you. It's held by clips, so a firm pull pops the front loose.

Step 2: Let the console hang on its wiring

Lower the console and let it hang. The metal mounting bracket stays in the headliner opening, and the console dangles from its wiring.

Step 3: Unplug the wiring connectors

Squeeze the wiring harness connectors on the back of the console and unplug them. The console is free after this.

Step 4: Lift the console free

That's the whole job. The mounting bracket is left in the headliner, ready for the replacement. Installation is these steps in reverse.

What to check on the replacement

  • Map light lenses and switches: press the map light buttons and check the lenses aren't cracked — these are the parts that wear out.
  • Storage door: open and close the compartment door and check the latch and hinge pins.
  • Color: match your interior — these came in tan and gray.
  • Connector pins: look at the pins on the back of the console for corrosion or bent pins.
