How to Remove the Headlight Switch in a 2004–2007 Ford F-150
Share
We're pulling the headlight switch out of a 2005 F-150 — same setup across the 2004–2007 trucks. Got this little pry tool here: stick it in there, pop one side, pop the other side — got two clips there, press there, press there — and that's removed.
What you'll need
- A little pry tool (trim tool)
- Gloves
Step 1: Pry the switch free from the dash
Find the headlight switch in the dash panel to the left of the steering column. Got this little pry tool here — stick it in there along the edge of the switch. Pop one side, pop the other side. Got two clips there — press there, press there — and that's removed.

Step 2: Pull the switch straight out
Grab the switch and pull it straight out of the dash opening. It comes out with the wiring still attached.

Step 3: Unplug the wiring connector
Don't let it dangle by the wires — hold the switch and unplug the wiring connector from the back of it.

Step 4: The switch is out
That's the whole job — the switch is removed and the dash opening is left empty behind it. Installation is these steps in reverse — plug in the connector and push the switch back into the opening until it clips in.

What to check on the replacement
- Clip condition: check the mounting clips and tabs on the switch housing — cracked or missing tabs mean it won't stay seated in the dash.
- Knob action: the rotary knob should turn smoothly through its positions without feeling loose or crunchy.
- Connector pins: look for bent, corroded, or burnt pins on the back of the switch before you buy.
