How to Remove the Climate Temp Control in a 2003–2006 Silverado/Sierra/Tahoe/Yukon

I'm gonna show you how to remove the climate control from this '03 Silverado — same setup on the 2003–2006 Silverado, Sierra, Tahoe, and Yukon. First step is to move that shifter down out of the way of the bezel, so we can just rip it off. Then we've got two 7 millimeter bolts holding the unit in.

What you'll need

  • An impact driver with a 7mm socket
  • A trim tool for working the clips loose
  • Gloves

Step 1: Move the shifter down and out of the way

First step is to move that shifter down and out of the way of the bezel so it doesn't block you.

Step 2: Rip the dash bezel off

Grab the dash bezel around the center stack and just rip it off — it's held by clips, so a firm pull pops it free and exposes the climate control mounting bolts.

Step 3: Take out the two 7mm mounting bolts

Now we've got two 7 millimeter bolts here holding the climate control. Run them out with the impact driver.

Step 4: Work the unit out of the dash

Use the trim tool to push up these two clips — push down and out that way — and pull the unit out of the opening so you can get better access to the little retention clips on the connectors.

Step 5: Pinch and remove the connectors

Don't let it dangle by the wires — support the unit and pinch these little retention clips to unplug each connector. Start with this one here: pinch and remove, pinch and remove.

Step 6: The unit is out

That's the whole job. Installation is these steps in reverse — plug in the connectors, bolt the unit back in, and push the bezel back on until it clips in.

What to check on the replacement

  • Knobs and sliders: turn every knob and move the temp slider through its full range — gritty or stuck controls are the most common issue.
  • Buttons: press each button and make sure it clicks and releases cleanly.
  • Options match: match your truck's setup — manual vs. automatic climate control and rear-defrost options are different units.
