How to Remove the Climate Control in a 2004–2008 Ford F-150

Today we're showing you how to remove the temp control from this 2005 F-150. The first step is jimmy this bezel here — since the radio's already out, I stick my hand in here and rip it. Twist the two clips down here, depress and remove the power plug, and we've got four T-20 screws — the temp control's out. Here's exactly how we pull them when we're getting climate controls ready for the store.

What you'll need

  • An impact driver with a T-20 Torx bit
  • That's it — the bezel comes off by hand (we wear work gloves)

Step 1: Jimmy the bezel off

The first step is jimmy this bezel here. Since the radio's already out, stick your hand in through the radio opening and rip the bezel off. It's held by clips, so a firm pull pops it free.

Step 2: Unplug the connector up top

We got a plug up here. Disconnect the wiring connector at the top of the opening behind the bezel.

Step 3: Twist the two rotating clips

There's two rotating clips down here — twist these tabs. Twist the two tabs at the bottom of the climate control module to release it, then pull the module forward out of the dash.

Step 4: Depress and remove the power plug

Get this power plug — depress and remove it. Press the tab on the power plug and unplug it from the back of the climate control module. Don't pull on the wires themselves.

Step 5: Drive out the four T-20 screws

And we've got four T-20. Drive out the four T-20 screws holding the temp control module with your impact driver, and the temp control's out.

Step 6: The temp control is out

That's the whole job. Installation is these steps in reverse.

What to check on the replacement

  • Manual vs. automatic: match your truck — the manual three-knob unit and the dual-zone automatic unit are different and don't interchange.
  • Knobs and buttons: check that the knobs turn smoothly and the buttons aren't sticky or worn blank.
  • Display and backlighting: make sure the display isn't faded and the button backlighting is intact.
